In Bosnia, DFE is exploring the situation of the smallholder forestry sector, which is neglected by policy makers. There is great potential in smallholder forestry. DFE is therefore working with the smallholders to give them skills on how they can manage their forest for economic and environmental benefit. Smallholder forest owners also learn about the importance and benefit of being organized to reach economies of scale from their small allotments.

We also work on advocacy activities to increase the interest of duty bearers to support smallholder private forestry. Thus, the ultimate goal is to help establish a membership based, democratic and professional forest owners association.

Denmark

DFE is managing a 2-year project to experiment with private sector partnerships – Corporate Social Responsibility projects. The project includes 5 Danish NGO’s and a communication company and aims to establish individual CSR partnerships and learn from practical experiences and professional in-puts. Danish companies are invited to participate in the project and special attention is given to developing the project business case, defining roles and responsibilities and produce internal and external communication material.

Activities in Denmark also includes engages with Danish forestry students from the University of Copenhagen as well as informing members of Skovdyrkerne about DFE's international activities.

In Npeal, DFE is working with local forest communities on how to better manage their forest resources to withstand climate change, to improve watershed management, and to gain economic benefit from the forests. We also link local forest enterprises to the international market, giving them access to a market for their Non Timber Forest Products. At the same time, we support advocacy issues towards securing rights of family forest owners.

Further, DFE also works with Interactive Environmental Education and improving the quality of environmental education. The new methods that teachers adopt are more hands-on and teach the next generation about the environmental problems and how they can be solved.

Vietnam

Vietnam

DFE is present in Northern Vietnam providing technical support to small scale farmers to improve the income generation and technical management of their commercial farm forests (mainly acacia tree planting). This has included education of local field facilitators and training of farmers in farmer field schools.

Lately the establishment of three independent cooperatives has provided a link to the local market as well as access to necessary production inputs and dialogue with forest authorities, for the local tree growers. Further, DFE is supporting the development of a farm forestry curriculum at college level which educate future professional forestry extension workers.

Mali

In Southern Mali, DFE works with female based shea-butter cooperatives and village committees to agroforestry systems to produce and sell responsible sourced firewood and food crops. DFE provides technical training in system design, tree planting, management, harvest and internal organization.

To engage the youth and promote entrepreneurial business development, DFE works with local university student who participate in workshops, business plan competitions and mentoring related to local natural resource management challenges. Further, DFE supports a yearly natural resource conference of where special attention is provided to the economic potential and environmental importance of local tree planting and forestry management.

Uganda

Uganda

DFE provide technical expertise to support the Ugandan forestry sector to produce offset carbon credits and wood-based green energy supplies. The capacity building includes technical forestry knowledge and GIS mapping to register plantations of Ugandan tree planters.

The project also increases the interest and possibilities for Danish companies to export technology and know-how related to the production and processing of biomass for green energy and carbon credits. The project aims to institutionalize the provided technical and operational knowledge to scale up forestry plantations in Uganda to sustainably produce and satisfy international demand for offset carbon credits and domestic demand for bio-fuel.
