Environmental Education in Mozambique – a glimpse of the project

Our Environmental Education project in Mozambique is coming to an end after three years of activities. Our partner ama has worked hard to create a successful cooperation with the education authorities and to spread environmental education in the province of Cabo Delgabo.

The overall goal was to equip children and young people with an understanding of the importance of ensuring the country's natural heritage and promote sustainable use of natural resources through hands-on experiences and active learning. The concept of hands-on environmental education (EE) is rooted in the idea that students learn best about the environment in the evnvironment and through interactive activities and experiments. 

Environmental Education in textbooks

Through the project ama has built a strong partnership with the Education Department at the District and Provincial level and together they developed a local curriculum along with textbooks on environmental education. The textbooks developed focus on the local environment familiar to the students and make them aware of how their day-to-day behavior has impact on their surroundings. Issues such as waste and wastewater management, exploitation of forest and mineral resources and protection of biodiversity is covered in the exercises.

Training teachers

To get first on experiences with hands-on EE, ama project staff  visited Nepal where they got training and inspiration from the Nepali partners, who are veterans in hands-on EE. These experiences were shared with the rest of the EE staff and that knowledge is still used in daily activity implementation. Ama has established a close collaboration with the Teachers Training Centers, where over 80 teachers received training in hands-on EE to inspire teachers to use active learning in teaching natural resource management.

Outdoor activities

In order for the students to truly understand their interactions in the environment, the project developed outdoor activities, which complement the in-class learning. Outdoor learning is about activating all school subjects from math to science, history and art outdoors so that the students learn about ”the reality in reality”: about nature in nature about society in society.

The activities the students engaged in covered anything from the water cycle, hygiene and sanitation, local flora and fauna and composting.

Advancing students understanding of the environment

The textbook and outdoor activities were designed for each class level, ensuring that students will continuously advance their understanding of the surrounding environment. Learning about practical environmental solutions can inspire the student to carry back and spread their knowledge to their homes and communities.
