First teachers’ training on ‘Interactive Environmental Education in Nepal

After months of work and preparations, the first national teachers’ training on ‘Interactive Environmental Education (IEE) and Local Curriculum on Environment’ kicked off in Kathmandu on November 29th – December 1st, involving 67 teachers from five districts: Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Nuwakot and Rasuwa.

Institutionalizing of trainings within the government training system

Nepal Prakriti Pathshala, a joint collaborative program of Wildlife Conservation Nepal and Danish Forestry Extension in association with the National Center for Educational Development (NCED) and Curriculum Development Center (CDC) arranged the three-day teachers’ training at Tilingatar Higher Secondary School in Kathmandu.

This is a significant moment in our partnership where we are working in collaboration with the concerned government education agencies to execute national trainings across the whole of Nepal. The goal is to train over 1,000 teachers and to institutionalize the training as the official training on interactive environmental education within the NCED under the Department of Education. 

 

Fun while learning

During the three days, the focus was on engaging the teachers to try out new methods of teaching about science and the environment that involved going outside, exploring, experimenting and using all the senses to understand such phenomena as erosion, habitat, climate and photosynthesis. The teacher’s built erosion models, explored photosynthesis by burning wood, filtered water, built solar cookers, and explored the surrounding environment.

Group work and discussion featured prominently. The teachers that go through the training become Eco-teachers and receive a certificate after they fulfil specific criteria and engage in specific teaching activities throughout the year at their school. As part of the training, they also became connected to the National Eco-teacher network an. The network is facilitated through an online platform, created by WCN, that allows them to stay connected, access teaching materials, share their experiences, and hear about the latest news and events related to IEE.

This is a big step in the right direction to improve the quality of environmental education of Nepal a country rich in natural resources and facing increasing environmental challenges.
