Mobile Nature School Nepal

DFE is working with its partner WCN on the implementation of the Mobile Nature School project. The aim is to contribute to higher awareness and behavioral change towards more responsible natural resource management by promoting better and more hands-on environmental education in schools. 

The project has been working from the bottom up, directly wtih students and teachers in over 300 schools while at the same time working from the top down, working closely with the ministry of education to include interactive environmental education in official school curricula. 

Nepal Prakriti Patshala Achievements

Nepal Prakriti Patshala stands for Nepal Nature School, which has been a growing success story since its inception in 2008. NPP began as a mobile nature school, which travelled to different schools across Nepal, implementing rural and urban outreach programs in over 300 schools. The outreach programs focused on using new interactive outdoor methods to learn about natural resources and the local environment. 

Another concept of the project is the child-to-home-to-community models such as Solid Waste Management, Organic Farming and Gardening, Climate Change Adaptation with Water Harvesting Models, Clean Energy with Improved Cooking Stoves, Weather Station and Waste Management. Here children are involved in learning about practical environmental solutions, which they carry back to their homes and communities. 

The project has since then developed local curricula in environmental education in two districts, along with textbooks. As a result of the two new local curricula, NPP was invited by the government to help design the National Framework for Local Curriculum Development, which is a practical guideline on how to develop and change local curricula. Now teachers have a practical manual on how they themselves can design local curricula, which for example can focus on environmental education. 

Three manuals at the secondary level were developed, tested and distributed to schools, giving students the opportunity to do practical hands-on outdoor activities related to environmental education. 

NPP Going Forward

While the past projects were focusing on working with schools and students, the expanded focus in the new project is on institutionalizing interactive environmental education (EE) methods within the Ministry of Education.

In practice, this means that WCN will develop, in cooperation with the government, a comprehensive interactive EE training package that will become part of the regular annual teacher training at the Education Training Centers. The teachers who receive the training will become green teachers and they will be equipped with the necessary tools to teach hands on EE and also to create green teacher groups and networks in their communities to further spread interactive environmental education.
