Support Nepal!

Support our target groups in Nepal struck by the recent earthquake.

An earthquake measuring 7,8 on the Richter scale struck Nepal the 25th of April 2015 and several aftershocks have been reported. The death toll is over 8000 and rising. Hundreds of thousands of people are homeless and thousands of buildings and large infrastructure have been destroyed. The extent of the damage in the isolated villages close to the epicenter is extreme and accounts tell that over 90% of the houses in the area are in ruins.

Kathmandu, Dhading and Rasuwa – three of our project areas – are on the list of the worst affected areas.

Emergency aid is on the way from everywhere, but it will take years to rebuild Nepal. DFE has been active in Nepal in the last 20 years. One of our most successful projects has been in cooperation with a local NGO, Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN), who focuses on spreading interactive environmental education in Nepal. WCN and DFE also work with Forest User Groups in Rasuwa. While our partner is still trying to get an overview of the extent of the damage in our project areas, they have witnessed great destruction in the villages that they have been able to visit so far. They have since the earthquakes been providing emergency relief in the form of food, water, medicine, tin roofs, tents, and blankets.  You can follow their daily activities on the special Facebook page they have created for this earthquake relief effort.

While there is a lot of activity at this moment in the form of immediate relief, we know that there will be a great need for help and support in the long term. WCN will focus its long term support on the following activities:

  • Building open space community centers based in schools for disaster preparedness with smart structures. It will support in developing sanitation facilities and large scale rain water harvesting to meet safe drinking water needs. It will also support the building of dry food storage.

  • A Scholarship Fund for orphaned children from the earthquake in WCN member schools in Kathmandu. This scholarship fund will support these children until they graduate from high school. Education will be crucial to the victim children of earthquake to build fulfilling life in society.

The efforts will be planned, coordinated and implemented together with our partner WCN, who has the local knowledge of the area we are working in. 100 % of the donations will go directly to WCN and be used in their relief efforts.

We kindly urge you to support DFE and WCN’s target group in Nepal with a donation. THANK YOU!
