Development of a new tourism concept in the Iringa region of Tanzania
Alongside the development of community-based woodland management programmes in the Iringa district, the concept arose of marketing of the region's natural beauty and nature resources. This would make use of local knowledge and skills, add value to local culture, and boost incomes. Following on from successful forestry development activities, the project employed local tour operators and Danish travel agents to develop the woodland's scenic beauty and hunting potential in a sustainable way. Marketing and development plans were drawn up, and funding resources developed for local entrepreneurs. There was interaction between the forest management plans and tourist marketing, particularly in establishing the carrying capacities and targeted investments in the infrastructure. Project outcomes include several commercially successful camping and accommodation facilities and other tourist services and attractions. Danida's Private Sector Programme supported the project.
Services provided by DFE staff:
Overall responsibility for project management, and scheduling of tasks and staff. Concept development, design and supervision of constructions, formulation of marketing plans and strategies, capacity-building with local partners and beneficiaries in the villages, establishment of a business concept and plan for the local tour operating company (Jungle Giraffe Safari Tours). Monitoring of the experiences of the first test groups. DFE staff have acted as tourist guides on the first ordinary trips for Danish tourists.
The real Africa
DFE has developed a different tourist concept as an offspring of a Danida funded project in Tanzanias Iringa district.
A number of villages have been handed over ownership rights to the Nyang'oro forest range. The scenic beauty of the area is unique.
A tourist operating company, Jungle Giraffe Safari Tours, was set up, a 15-day tour tested, and the Chapuya Camp overlooking the Mtera Dam was constructed.
Danida's Private Sector Programme supported the idea. DFE matched Jungle Giraffe Safari Tours with the Danish travel agency Dumas-Johansen Agricultural Tours.
