The Climate Change Challenge
The need for action
The need for action by both public authorities and private companies to fulfil national obligations on carbon emission reductions is getting more and more urgent. Most of the countries committed under the Kyoto Protocol are lagging seriously behind. And most of the 'easy' projects have already been done.
Two project categories though have nearly unlimited potential, namely fuel switch and sinks projects. Of course within these categories, the most obvious and financially viable ones will be taken first.

Five-year old teak plantation in Terai, Nepal. The plantation was established using the classic Taungay silvicultural system.
The Danish Forestry Extension (DFE) is one of the still relatively few companies with hands-on experience with both handling the CDM (Clean Development) Process, and implementing fuel switch and sinks projects. DFE is presently engaged in a large afforestation (sinks) project in Kenya and in the design of a 5MWe biomass fired combined power and heat plant in South Africa.
Since 2003 DFE has strengthened its capacity and expertise in the field of emission reduction projects, and is now able to offer the following services:
- Negotiation with involved parties and facilitation and processing of Letters of Intent and Emission Reduction Purchase Agreements (ERPA)
- Preparation of Project Idea Notes (PIN), Baseline methodologies and Project Design Documents (PDD)
- Facilitation of host country approval
- Investment prospects and marketing of Certified Emission Reductions (CER) - carbon credits
- Screening, mapping and modelling of biomass resources
- Wood chip and biomass supply planning
- Logistical management and supervision in connection with the delivery of biomass resources
- A software solution to handle logistics called 'Biomass Manager'
- Carbon sequestration through afforestation (sinks) and sustainable forest and nature resource management

Chipping of wood residuals and whole trees from the first thinning. The chips will be used as fuel in a combined power and heat plant, replacing traditional fossil fuels like coal.
