Commercial Forestry in Kenya

Afforestation - Establishment of Commercial Plantations 2005-2006 Pilotproject

Within the framework of a Danish-Kenyan joint venture, the investors aim to establish 15-20,000 hectares of commercial plantation in Homa Bay and Suba in South Nyanza District.

The planned afforestation is based on the following expected products and philosophy:

  • Short term (5-6 years) - firewood, pools, charcoal for local consumption and carbon sinks.
  • Medium term (about 20 years) - electricity pool and timber to be processed at sawmill in the region and carbon sinks.
  • Long term about (40 years) - high quality hardwood saw logs and carbon sinks.
  • Natural forest on the hilltops, on steep slopes and ravines, hopefully based on natural regeneration from what might be left of active roots of the previous forest in the area.
  • Production and management will be certified.

Danida's Private Sector Programme is supporting the project.

Services provided by DFE staff:

Project management, liaison with Kenyan partners, design of demonstration plots, species selection, instructions for the establishment of plantings, CDM approval procedure, marketing analyses, and investment calculations.

The new plantations will be established in close collaboration with the local communities on slopes where woodlands were the dominant land-use in the first half of the last century.
