The objectives of the study were to provide an overview on regional political processes which affect the issue of illegal logging (Africa FLEG, Asia FLEG, G8, WSSD and others). Main findings including political commitments, legal instruments put in place, etc. Overview of international initiatives in connection with illegal logging in Europe, existing information, results of research projects, reports, regulations, etc. about illegal logging issues. To estimate the extent of the problem in Europe based on existing information. Analysis of to what extent this is a market/trade issue, a forestry issue, a juridical issue, a question of finance and/or the fight against organised crime. Also considered was the question of forest biodiversity.


DFE provided a co-author / forest specialist with special focus on the FLEG initiatives in Asia and Africa.
