Sustainable Management Strategy for Forested Wetlands

A Sustainable Management Strategy for Estonian Forested Wetlands

The project produced a comprehensive strategy for sustainable management of forested wetlands owned by the Estonian State Forest Service. The strategy contributed considerably to Estonian biodiversity conservation efforts. The strategy established economic and biologically based land-classification criteria. Nature registration and inventory methods were developed and incorporated in existing computer-based inventory systems used for forest management and land-use planning. Management guidelines and protective measures were developed in order to integrate nature protection in forest management practices.

Services provided by DFE staff

DFE provided short-term consultancies for this two-year project. Focus was on contributing to the development of economic models for multiple-use decisions, selection criteria, classification, registration and monitoring systems. Activities like outreach, production of extension material, training, input to seminars and elaboration of the guidelines were the responsibility of DFE.
