Tree Improvement Programme

Tree Improvement Programme in Nepal (TIP)

The main tasks of TIP were to provide the national afforestation programme with tree seed of good physiological and genetic quality. Seed sources were identified in the natural forests, seed orchards were established, and valuable tree species were protected. Staff were trained in seed collection, handling, storage, germination and seed production.

Under the sector programme the tasks expanded, now taking into account the commercial seed market in the country and especially the farmers' demand for fodder species. A substantial effort was put into developing a digitised iso-potential vegetation map of the whole of Nepal - a tool that can be used in all sorts of planning in the natural resource sectors (agriculture, forestry, horticulture, etc.).

Services provided by DFE staff

Danish Forestry Extension provided the project with a gap filler on the CTA position for a period of 3 months and after that a CTA for a period of 2½ years. During the period, TIP became TISC (Tree Improvement Silviculture Component) a component in Danida's Natural Resource Management Sector Programme in Nepal.
