Capacity-building Tree Seed Project

Capacity-building in the National Tree Seed Programme

The Sudanese Tree Seed Programme consisted of the Seed Centre in Khartoum and a regional seed centre in El Obeid. Two new regional centres were under construction. A seed zoning map of Sudan was elaborated. A number of breeding seed orchards were under establishment and the planning of more was in process. The identification of natural seed sources had high priority and so had collection of seed. Less attention was given to the distribution of seeds and the business aspects of handling the logistics from identification of quality seed sources to demand-driven collection and distribution to customers. Generating income from seed sales was a major topic during the phasing out of the project.

Services provided by DFE staff

DFE provided the project with a CTA on a fly-in-fly-out basis over a year during phasing out. Activities were focused on: Management, training, institutional building and marketing, and supervision of the construction of two additional regional centres under the National Tree Seed Centre.
